04 Dealing with dental psychosomatic disorders
Glossodynia, oral dysesthesia, atypical toothpain
We not only treat dental problems such as cavities and periodontal disease, but also oral problems that are not caused by teeth. We also treat oral discomfort that could not be solved until now, such as "stinging tongue" and "slimy feeling in the mouth".
Dental psychosomatic disorder is a condition in which a patient experiences chronic dental symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or other unpleasant sensations in the mouth, even though various tests have revealed no problems in the mouth that match the symptoms the patient is feeling.
Specifically, these include "glossodynia," "atypical toothache," "oral dysesthesias," "halitosis (halitophobia)," and "dental phobia." Because these symptoms occur inside the mouth, most patients first visit a dental clinic. Even after undergoing an internal and external oral examination by a dentist, there is often no clear problem, and a clear diagnosis cannot be made. In some cases, the patient is advised to visit another clinic because the cause is unknown.
However, dental clinics do not refer patients to the next hospital, and patients do not know which hospital to visit, so they search for dental clinics on their own and go from one to another. Some patients do not understand even if they repeatedly complain about their symptoms, and are told at dental clinics that "there is nothing wrong" or "it's all in your head." Even if they are encouraged to visit a psychiatrist or psychosomatic medicine clinic, the psychiatrist will also tell them, "dental issues are not our specialty, so please consult a dental clinic," and they often go around in circles and get nowhere. Since dental psychosomatic disorders manifest in the mouth even when there are no dental problems, we believe that it is primarily the dental clinic that needs to sincerely confront the patient.
There are only a handful of dental clinics nationwide that understand dental psychosomatic disorders, address the symptoms and patients, and provide the necessary treatment. For the treatment of dental psychosomatic disorders, collaboration with medical, dental, and pharmaceutical departments, as well as collaboration with advanced medical institutions such as university hospitals, is extremely important, and comprehensive medical care is required. At present, understanding and collaboration regarding dental psychosomatic disorders is not at a sufficient stage. Our clinic aims to provide dental care that can be provided as a private dental clinic rooted in the community, by being close to patients and providing appropriate medical care. The director has gained experience in the dental psychosomatic disorder outpatient clinic at a university hospital and the only dental psychosomatic disorder clinic in Japan.
