Controlling biofilms and maintaining health

◆ Thoroughly remove biofilm

Our clinic's cleaning system uses powder cleaning using the airflow system from the Swiss company EMS.

Traditional preventive dentistry involved removing tartar and biofilm using scalers and hand instruments, but this carried a high risk of causing pain and damaging teeth and implants.

However, powder cleaning is less invasive than traditional methods, reducing the need for hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, providing a safer and more effective cleaning of teeth and soft tissues.

This powder cleaning is suitable for a wide range of people, including children over the age of two, people with periodontal disease, and people with implants.

This allows for more efficient cleaning, resulting in more comfortable and time-efficient treatment.

◆No polishing required, no toothpaste required

With conventional mechanical tooth surface cleaning (polishing), it is difficult to reach the back teeth and the backs of the teeth with instruments, and there are cases where areas are not polished properly.

Powder cleaning uses very fine cleaning powder with a particle size of 14 μm, which is directed toward the teeth and periodontal pockets along with a water flow, making it possible to clean every nook and cranny, even in areas that were previously difficult to clean.

In addition, when attempting to remove biofilm from periodontal pockets with conventional mechanical tooth surface cleaning (polishing), there was the risk that the rotating brush would hit the gums and cause pain. However, powder cleaning uses powder and water flow from the tip of the machine to clean, so the instrument does not come into direct contact with the teeth or gums.

Of course, there is no need to polish the tooth surface, so there is no need for toothpaste (paste) used for polishing the tooth surface.

◆GBT(Guided Biofilm Therapy)とは

GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) is an approach advocated by EMS that aims to remove "biofilm," which is believed to be the underlying cause of inflammation such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and peri-implantitis, and to achieve health management of not only the oral cavity but the entire body.

It consists of eight protocols advocated by EMS, based on a wealth of clinical evidence from around the world.

GBT is a treatment method that follows this protocol and involves sequentially conducting periodontal tissue examinations and periodontal disease treatments.

Simply cleaning alone is not a fundamental prevention of periodontal disease. In the GBT steps, we work with patients to consider where biofilms are attached, how to remove them, and how to maintain an environment where biofilms are less likely to attach.

In addition, by staining and visualizing the biofilm before cleaning, patients can see for themselves where the biofilm is attached.

Areas where biofilm is found have a high risk of inflammation, so we will consider reviewing brushing methods and cleaning tools.

By actually visualizing the biofilm, risk areas become clearer to the dentist or dental hygienist performing the procedure, enabling speedy and accurate biofilm removal.

The GBT program not only involves cleaning using airflow, but also a thorough examination of the entire condition of your mouth, including periodontal tissue tests, checking the level of plaque and tartar buildup, and checking brushing methods. By identifying problems and providing appropriate treatment, we are able to provide more effective periodontal disease treatment.

◆Does not damage important fillings such as ceramics or implants

Airflow cleaning can also be performed on patients' precious ceramic or teeth that have undergone implant treatment.

In particular, with ultrasonic scaling, there is a risk of causing microscopic scratches if the tip of the tip accidentally comes into contact with a crown, but with powder cleaning, the instrument cleans without directly touching the teeth, so there is no need to worry about damaging your teeth.

If there is still tartar remaining after the airflow treatment, we will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove only the remaining tartar, allowing us to proceed with treatment while minimizing damage and irritation.

This is extremely beneficial for those undergoing orthodontic treatment, as powder cleaning can thoroughly clean areas around the orthodontic appliances that are difficult to reach with just a toothbrush.

Risks and Side Effects

  • Temporary sensitivity may occur after surgery.

  • When the powder spray comes into contact with the tongue or oral mucosa, a temporary tingling sensation may occur.
